How to: Design A Living Room
Many families have failed in decorating their living rooms in a way that is simple, comfortable, and classic. This article helped them improve their decorating skills and left them will a sophisticated, budget-friendly living room.
The main room in the house and the room where the family liked to express their personal style was the living room. It was a top priority when it came to decoration and design. Because it was a place where comfort was key, it was relatively easy to decorate. However, a classic, sophisticated living room was, as always, the best option because the decor was timeless and was easily manageable on a budget. When just starting to design a room, they found out what the price range was so it was easy to shop and design accordingly. "It was really easy to overspend and that would be horrible," said freshman Becky Wockley. The classic living room started with the basic "building blocks": a sofa, side chairs, a coffee table, curtains, and lamps. Picking out the perfect staple items gave the room a great foundation and it was much easier to start decorating. It was very smart to go with classic, sophisticated, and timeless pieces for the living room, like a neutral leather couch and plain white lamps. That way, if the living room's design changes in the future, it won't cost a lot of money and the basic items won't need to be repurchased. Once all of the staple pieces were bought, it was time to plan for designing the room. "This gave an idea of what the living room will look like," said freshman Laurel Carpenter. Once they had a theme, designing and decorating got much easier. The first step was picking out the paint color. Using a color palette ensured that all the colors in the room matched. "If the colors didn't match, the room would have looked sloppy," said junior Lindsey Chiesa. When the family bought large pieces like paintings or other large decorations, investing wisely was the key. They looked around local art galleries to find stylish, affordable pieces that were good quality and will last a while, but still looked classic and expensive. Decorations were the finishing touches on the room. "They really made the room seem more put together and enhanced the general look of the room," said freshman Makayla Caso. The most popular decoration in a living room was an area rug because they work with almost any style; they either relaxed the look of a room or were the focal piece. Another simple way to spice up the look of the room were the drapes. They can made a huge difference to the "feel" of the room and were very eye-capturing. Drapes can made the room look more extravagant and expensive. Getting the right basics and decorations was the perfect mix for a classic living room. by Heather Bogart |
